Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & LexisNexis

Did you know that BP, the company at the heart of the giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, has bought several search terms in order to make sure they are at the top of the results list page as a sponsored link?

Try it now. Go to http://www.google.com, and type in either BP or type in Oil Spill. You will see a yellow sponsored link at the top of the results list page, which allows you to “learn more on how BP is helping”.

While this is a brilliant marketing move, it is another way in which search engines can be “tampered” with for just a bit of money, whereas databases provided by The Sullivan Library cannot be. Did you know we have a database by the name of LexisNexis Academic? This database will provide you with current newspaper articles from newspapers across the globe, big and small. This way you can get a wealth of information about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

To connect to LexisNexis, go to http://libdb.dc.edu/login with your Dominican College log-in information.

Then type in, for example, the following: gulf of mexico oil spill

You should see a screen like the one above, with links to relevant news articles.

Subject Guides @ The Sullivan Library

Did you know that The Sullivan Library has researched the fields that you are interested in here at Dominican College? Each of the pages includes information tailored to your field, including: useful subscription databases to search for journal articles and reference information, Open Access (viewable by all) electronic journals, Government and Non-Government Organization (NGO) Resources on the free web, associations that you can be a part of, and printed reference resources that can be consulted when you are visiting the physical library!

Here is a list of current subject guides that we have already designed:

Accounting, Athletic Training, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Communication, Criminal Justice, Education, English and Literature, History, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Social Work, with more in the planning stages!

You can also access the subject guides by going to http://my.dc.edu (known as the “Portal” pages), clicking on the “Library” tab near the top of the screen, and looking on the left side navigation bar for the link that says “SUBJECT GUIDES”. Feel free to bookmark the main Subject Guides page or one of the subject guide links above so you can always find it easily.

Workshop Handouts

The following workshop handouts are available. If you would like any of these, please send an email to Nicole.Kranich (at) dc.edu.

Database Searching (doc) – Learn the differences between searching Google and searching a database.

NowQuest & EBSCOhost (Academic Search Elite database) (doc) — Screenshots of our two most widely used databases. Learn how to find, save, print, and email articles for your projects.

Intute: Subject Directory Website… and more!

Do you need to find some authoritative websites to cite, either for a paper or for your own personal research? Intute is a very useful website to bookmark. One goal of this UK-based website is to “help you find the best websites for study and research”. You can either browse their web resources by subject — for example, they have Nursing, Midwifery, and Allied Health; Psychology; Communication and Media Studies; and Biological Sciences — or you can type in the search terms you are looking for right on that main page. For example, try a search for: hospice and palliative care. (Those who cannot spell well will be happy to note that it also includes a “Did you mean?” feature.)

A second goal of this website is to provide some excellent research tutorials in certain subject areas — they have over 60, so far. These tutorials last about an hour, and are self-guided. Best of all, you will leave the tutorial with a set of web sites about your subject area that you can look over. Some of the tutorials include: Business and Management; Education; English; History; Mathematics; Media and Communication; Medicine; Microbiology; Nursing; Psychology; and Social Work. There are many more!

The tutorials cover the following four areas:

1. Tour the best of the Web for that subject area

2. Judge which Internet resources are appropriate for university work

3. Discover how to find scholarly information online (including useful search strategy tips)

4. Success — examples of students using the Internet for research

Changes to Gale’s Business and Company Resource Center database

Gale’s database Business and Company Resource Center has some exciting additions. These include an all-new homepage, SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, threat) analyses, and a new financial dashboard.

To test out the latter two, currently enrolled students and faculty can login to the databases. Once you are logged in, choose Gale, and then scroll down a bit to find Business and Company Resource Center.

Do a company search for Pfizer (stock symbol PFE). Choose the first one, with headquarters in New York, New York. The SWOT analysis will be located in a long blue button just above the company name Pzifer Inc. (PFE). It will be a downloadable PDF. The new financial dashboard is located by searching for the company, choosing Financials in the yellow tabs, and looking near the top of the screen, above Pfizer, Inc.

For more information, please navigate to Gale’s announcement.
