Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & LexisNexis

Did you know that BP, the company at the heart of the giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, has bought several search terms in order to make sure they are at the top of the results list page as a sponsored link?

Try it now. Go to http://www.google.com, and type in either BP or type in Oil Spill. You will see a yellow sponsored link at the top of the results list page, which allows you to “learn more on how BP is helping”.

While this is a brilliant marketing move, it is another way in which search engines can be “tampered” with for just a bit of money, whereas databases provided by The Sullivan Library cannot be. Did you know we have a database by the name of LexisNexis Academic? This database will provide you with current newspaper articles from newspapers across the globe, big and small. This way you can get a wealth of information about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

To connect to LexisNexis, go to http://libdb.dc.edu/login with your Dominican College log-in information.

Then type in, for example, the following: gulf of mexico oil spill

You should see a screen like the one above, with links to relevant news articles.
