Types of items within the catalog

When you run a search in our catalog and see a list of results, on the right side you will see icons depicting the type of item that you are looking at. The most common ones include:

This item is a physical book which can be checked out of the library (if it is available on the shelves). If it is not available the record will say “item is checked out / charged out” (or similar) on the item record page under “Location”.

This item is an Ebrary electronic full-text book which may be accessed from the catalog by clicking the . The ‘chainlink’ icon to access the full-text is visible on both the results page and the item information page. If you are accessing the catalog from off-campus, you might have to log in first.

This is another electronic full-text icon. It designates that the item is either an ACLS Humanities E-Book or it is a Credo Electronic Reference Book. You can also click the ‘chainmail icon’ shown for Ebrary to access the full-text for this type as well.

This is another electronic full-text icon (not as common). It designates that the item is a NetLibrary E-Book. You can also click the ‘chainmail icon’ shown for Ebrary to access the full-text for this type as well, however if you are viewing it from home you will have to login with your Dominican College username and password.

This icon is used for reference materials which are available for in-library use only. They cannot be checked out.

This icon is used for current journals which the library is currently receiving. They are located in the Periodicals room. They cannot be checked out, though you can copy pages from them with your DC-1 card (10c/page with your DC-1 card).

This icon is use for past journals which the library is no longer receiving. Typically issues are bound together by year. Ask for assistance with these in the Periodicals Room. They cannot be checked out, though you can copy pages from them with your DC-1 card (10c/page).

This designates that the item is on microfilm, which is a type of material used to condense journals to save space. The librarian or periodicals staff member will handle this item. You cannot check this item out, although you can make copies of this item (5c/page, cash only).
