Google adds Reading Level to advanced search options

Of special interest to Education students here at Dominican College: Google has added a new “Reading Level” option to the advanced search, which breaks down each result into three categories: basic, intermediate, and advanced. You can find the official Google reading level support document here.

To activate this, you must first go to advanced search on the right side of the search box. (Note: my advanced search looks a bit different as I have a blue background image.)

Once you are on the advanced search page, you will be presented with various reading level options (below):

Choose the option you want, and then type in your search terms. Click “more” below to keep reading.

Here are the remaining workshops for the Fall 2010 semester. Is there a workshop you are interested in but cannot attend? Feel free to take a look here: https://sullivanlibrary.wordpress.com/handouts/. After each workshop is completed, a handout is uploaded with the information that was given to the students who attended in person.

All students, faculty, adjuncts and staff are invited to the following workshops. Each workshop is held in the Sullivan Library computer lab.  If you have not attended a library workshop yet this semester, you are missing out!

Working on a research assignment? This workshop will go over everything you need to know, from when you receive the assignment to when you start writing it. Topics include where to search for sources, figuring out your research question, and designing a thesis statement.

The Perfect Head Start: Journal Articles for Arts & Sciences and Education
Tuesday, November 9 from 12:45 to 1:45 PM
Take a look at EBSCOhost databases that might be useful for your academic research by finding journal, magazine, and newspaper articles. Also useful for Psychology students. Open to all students, faculty and staff regardless of major.

Citin’ in Style: APA and MLA Explained

New EBSCOhost databases: European Views of the Americas, Teacher Reference Center

The Sullivan Library is pleased to announce the addition of two EBSCOhost Web databases to its offerings:

European Views of the Americas: 1493 to 1750
This new bibliographic database is a valuable index for libraries, scholars and individuals interested in European works that relate to the Americas. EBSCO Publishing, in cooperation with the John Carter Brown Library, has created this resource from “European Americana: A Chronological Guide to Works Printed In Europe Relating to The Americas, 1493-1750,” the authoritative bibliography that is well-known and respected by scholars worldwide. The database contains more than 32,000 entries and is a comprehensive guide to printed records about the Americas written in Europe before 1750.

Teacher Reference Center
Teacher Reference Center provides indexing and abstracts for 280 of the most popular teacher and administrator journals and magazines to assist professional educators.

Note that both of these databases are indices; the full-text would need to be found in a different database or requested from another institution. For more information on finding or requesting the full-text, try Journal Article/Book Request and Serial Solutions Info (.doc).

11 Tech Ideas for Teachers

There is an article over at FreeTech4Teachers highlighting 11 things that teachers can try to prepare for the start of the upcoming school year. From building a blog to using Google Maps to tell a story to your students, this site has some tips. It will even tell you what service you can use to help eliminate your Inbox Overload!

The article itself, entitled “11 Techy Things for Teachers to Try This Year”, can be read here.

As an unrelated bonus (and not just for teachers!) here is the 2010 Social Networking Map from Flowtown.

I Education Apps Review (IEAR)

If you are in the Teachers of Students with Disabilities or the Teachers of Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired programs here at Dominican College, it might be worthwhile for you to take a look at the www.iear.org site, specifically this post which talks about apps for students with special needs (the platforms are iTouch, iPhone, and iPad).

One app that was reviewed was CrazyFaceLite: “Free app by Ezone.com where a green furry monster face moves his/her lips whenever you talk; great for students with trouble speaking, encourages shy students to speak more often.”

And also, note the link at the bottom of the blog post for the work posted by Eric Sailer: iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Apps for (Special) Education (scribd.com).
